LASC and the LEAP Initiative at Worcester State University

Worcester State University is one of approximately 300 American Association of Colleges and University members to have joined the LEAP Campus Action Network. Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP) essential learning outcomes provide a framework for pursing educational excellence through student achievement of the broad learning outcomes of a liberal education. The Liberal Arts and Sciences Curriculum (LASC) program outcomes align closely with the LEAP essential learning outcomes of knowledge across the disciplines, intellectual and practical skills, personal and social responsibility and integrative and applied learning (LASC-LEAP Alignment). These shared learning outcomes will best prepare our students to be lifelong learners, to be engaged citizens and to meet the daily challenges of work and life in an increasingly complex, rapidly changing global environment.

LASC and Integrative Learning at Worcester State University

The Liberal Arts and Sciences Curriculum (LASC) provides opportunities for integrative learning. The curriculum is integrative in that each of the content areas addressed are not driven by one disciplinary perspective but encourage students to view these broad areas from multiple vantage points. Students, with the guidance of their academic advisor, have the opportunity to create an individualized Liberal Arts and Sciences Curriculum that will emphasize and draw upon the connections between the liberal arts and their major field of study and the connections in general between the disciplines. In particular, the first-year seminar encourages students to examine a topic from diverse points of view and multiple disciplinary perspectives. The capstone experience requires synthesis and integration of prior knowledge and abilities. Both of these core components of the LASC foster the ability to make connections between courses and across disciplines.
